When Others See What We Miss | Thursday
Dr. Michael Gossett

Devotional
One of the most striking parts of Jonah’s story is that while the prophet was sleeping in rebellion, pagan sailors were crying out to God. These men, who knew nothing about the God of Israel, were more spiritually responsive than God’s own prophet.

Sometimes God uses the most unexpected people to show us His truth. The sailors’ genuine seeking and worship put Jonah’s spiritual apathy to shame. They were experiencing a spiritual awakening while Jonah was experiencing spiritual numbness.

This challenges us to stay humble and teachable. God might speak to you through a child’s innocent question, a stranger’s kindness, or even someone you consider spiritually immature. When we think we have God figured out, we often miss what He’s trying to show us through others.

The sailors’ response also reminds us that God’s grace extends to everyone, regardless of their background or knowledge. He draws people to Himself in ways that often surprise us. Their hearts were open to truth, while Jonah’s was closed by prejudice and pride.

Today, ask God to give you eyes to see His work in unexpected places and through unexpected people. Stay humble enough to learn from anyone He puts in your path.

Bible Verse
‘No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day.’ – John 6:44

Reflection Question
Who has God used in your life to teach you something important, even though you might not have expected to learn from them?

Quote
Not one time in this chapter is Jonah praying. The pagans are doing it.

Prayer
God, keep my heart humble and teachable. Help me to see Your work through unexpected people and circumstances, and don’t let pride blind me to Your truth.
