The Downward Spiral | Wednesday
Dr. Michael Gossett

Devotional
Sin has a gravitational pull. When Jonah chose rebellion over obedience, he didn’t just make one bad decision – he started a downward spiral. He went down to Joppa, down into the ship, down into the inner part of the ship, and eventually down into the belly of a fish.

This pattern reveals something crucial about sin: it never stays neutral. Every choice either moves us closer to God or further away from Him. There’s no spiritual coasting. Sin promises freedom but delivers bondage, promising satisfaction but bringing emptiness.

What’s even more sobering is that Jonah’s rebellion didn’t just affect him. His choices put an entire ship of sailors in mortal danger. Our sin never maintains isolated impact – it ripples out to affect our families, friends, and communities in ways we might not even realize.

But here’s the hope: even in the belly of the fish, even at the bottom of his downward spiral, Jonah was still within reach of God’s grace. No matter how far down sin has taken you, God’s hand can still reach you. His grace is deeper than your deepest failure.

Today, if you recognize a downward pattern in your life, remember that God specializes in lifting people up from the depths.

Bible Verse
‘The Lord disciplines those he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.’ – Hebrews 12:6

Reflection Question
What downward patterns do you notice in your life, and how might God be using circumstances to lovingly redirect your path?

Quote
Every step you take in sin is a step downward. Never are you moving in some type of neutrality. You are either moving away from God or you moving toward God.

Prayer
Lord, help me recognize when I’m moving away from You. Give me the wisdom to choose Your way over my own, and lift me up from any downward spiral I may be in.
