Settling Our Debts | Thursday
Devotional
We all carry debts in our relationships – some we owe, others owed to us. If we’ve wronged someone, we owe them a humble apology. If someone has wronged us, we owe them forgiveness. If someone has blessed us, we owe them gratitude. These relational debts can weigh heavily on our hearts and hinder our spiritual growth. But there’s an even greater debt we must address – our sin debt to God. We cannot control others’ actions or attitudes, but we can control our own responses. Taking responsibility for our part in broken relationships demonstrates spiritual maturity and opens the door for healing. However, our good works and religious activities cannot pay the debt we owe to a holy God. We’re too sinful, and He’s too holy for us to bridge that gap through our own efforts. The best five minutes of our lives wouldn’t be enough to earn our way into heaven. This reality should drive us to humility, not despair. God has provided a way for our debt to be paid through Christ’s sacrifice. When we acknowledge our inability to save ourselves and trust in Jesus, our debt is transferred to Him and His righteousness is credited to us.
Bible Verse
“All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” – Romans 3:23
Reflection Question
What relational or spiritual debts do you need to address today, and what’s preventing you from taking action?
Quote
If I have wronged someone, I owe them the debt of my humble apology. If someone has wronged me, I owe the debt of forgiveness. If someone has blessed me, I owe them my gratitude.
Prayer
God, help me take responsibility for my debts to others and to You. Give me courage to seek forgiveness and extend it freely.
