Astonished at His Greatness | Friday
Dr. Michael Gossett

Devotional
When Jesus cast out the demon that the disciples couldn’t handle, something remarkable happened: everyone was astonished at the greatness of God. This wasn’t just mild appreciation or polite acknowledgment – this was jaw-dropping amazement at witnessing divine power in action.

One of the greatest gifts of walking through valleys of desperation is that we get to be astonished at God’s greatness in ways we never would have experienced otherwise. When we’re comfortable and self-sufficient, we rarely see God move in miraculous ways. But when we’re desperate and at the end of our resources, we create space for God to demonstrate His power.

Every moment of our lives should actually be desperate in the best sense – a recognition that we need God and can do nothing apart from Him. This isn’t about living in anxiety, but about living in healthy dependence. Every minute of our day should be a declaration that ‘God, we need You.’

Whatever valley you’re facing right now is not the end of your story. While mountaintop experiences may feel more spiritual, much of our growth happens in the fertile soil of the valley. It’s there that our roots go deeper, our faith gets stronger, and we discover aspects of God’s character we never knew before.

Your victory is ultimately secured not in your ability to overcome, but in Christ’s finished work. Because He is victorious, your triumph is guaranteed. The valley you’re walking through is temporary, but the growth and the deeper knowledge of God you gain there will last for eternity.

Bible Verse
‘Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth.’ – Philippians 2:9-10

Reflection Question
How has God shown His greatness in your current or past valleys in ways you might not have seen if life had been easy?

Quote
I think one of the greatest gifts of the Valley of Desperation is that you and I would be astonished at the greatness of God.

Prayer
Father, open my eyes to see Your greatness even in the midst of my valleys. Help me to live in healthy dependence on You, recognizing that every breath is a gift and every moment is an opportunity to witness Your power. Thank You that my victory is secured in Christ. Amen.
