Keep Your Eyes on Jesus | Friday
Devotional
Peter’s mistake on the mountain is one we all make. Overwhelmed by the spectacular scene before him, he suggested building three shelters – one for Jesus, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. In his enthusiasm, he was treating them as equals. But God the Father immediately corrected this error by removing Moses and Elijah, leaving only Jesus visible, and declaring, “This is my Son, listen to him!”
It’s easy to get distracted, isn’t it? We can become so focused on spiritual heroes, religious traditions, or even good works that we lose sight of Jesus himself. Moses and Elijah were champions of faith, but they didn’t die for us. They don’t intercede for us. They can’t save us. Only Jesus can do that.
God doesn’t share his glory with anyone. When we elevate anything or anyone to the level of Christ, we’ve missed the point entirely. Jesus must remain supreme in our hearts and minds. He is the way, the truth, and the life. He is the only mediator between God and humanity.
The challenge for us is to keep Jesus ever before us, not letting anything rival him in our affections or attention. When we’re truly listening to Jesus, we’ll find ourselves in harmony with other believers who are also listening to him. But when we’re distracted by other voices or priorities, discord follows.
As we conclude this journey together, let this be our commitment: to set our minds on things above, on the coming kingdom with our risen Savior reigning in glory. Everything else is secondary. Everything else will fade. But Jesus remains forever, and in him, we have everything we need.
Bible Verse
‘Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.’ – Colossians 3:1
Reflection Question
What things in your life might be competing with Jesus for your attention and devotion, and how can you refocus on him alone?
Quote
Listen, Church, I remind myself, don’t let anything distract and dim your view of Jesus. Keep him ever before you. Don’t let anything rival Him.
Prayer
Father, help me to keep my eyes fixed on Jesus alone. Remove any distractions that would dim my view of him. May he be supreme in my heart, my thoughts, and my daily choices. Keep me focused on the coming kingdom and the hope I have in Christ. Amen.
