The Shrinking Monster | Monday
Dr. Michael Gossett

Devotional
Have you ever noticed how the things you desperately want seem to lose their shine once you get them? That promotion you worked so hard for, the relationship you thought would complete you, or the purchase you saved up for months to make—somehow they all feel smaller once they’re yours.

This isn’t a cruel joke life plays on us; it’s actually evidence of how we’re designed. We’re created with deep hunger and yearning because we’re made in God’s image. Our souls are wired for something greater than what this world can offer.

Modern culture constantly promises that the next achievement, possession, or experience will finally bring the satisfaction we crave. We chase after bigger houses, newer cars, more money, thinking these will fill the void inside us. But every time we reach these goals, we discover they become less significant than we imagined.

The truth is, we live in a culture that is full but not satisfied. We’re surrounded by abundance yet plagued by emptiness because we keep pursuing the wrong thing. That restless feeling in your heart isn’t something to ignore or medicate—it’s pointing you toward your true need.

God placed that hunger in you intentionally. It’s meant to drive you to seek Him, not the temporary pleasures of this world. When we understand this, we can stop being frustrated by our dissatisfaction and start seeing it as a compass pointing us home.

Bible Verse
‘Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare.’ – Isaiah 55:1-2

Reflection Question
What are you currently pursuing that you hope will bring you satisfaction, and how might God be using your dissatisfaction to point you toward Him?

Quote
The closer that I got to this monster, the smaller it became.

Prayer
Lord, help me recognize that my restless heart is designed to find its rest in You alone. Give me wisdom to stop chasing after things that cannot satisfy and turn my eyes toward the true source of fulfillment. Amen.
