Surrendering Self-Reliance | Thursday
Devotional
Jesus gave His disciples a surprising instruction: “Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt.” This wasn’t about traveling light; it was about learning to depend completely on God rather than their own resources.
The greatest threat to effective ministry isn’t lack of training or resources—it’s self-reliance. When we depend on our own abilities, connections, or preparations, we limit what God can do through us. The one thing that will minimize the mission and its effectiveness is trusting in anything other than Christ.
This principle challenges our natural instincts. We want to be prepared, to have backup plans, to feel secure in our own capabilities. But Jesus calls us to a different kind of security—one found in complete dependence on Him. Whatever you are most dependent on is what you are most focused on.
The disciples’ journey without provisions taught them that God’s provision is more reliable than their own preparation. When they returned, they had everything they needed and more. Their needs were met not through their planning but through God’s faithfulness.
This doesn’t mean we should be irresponsible or unprepared. Rather, it means our ultimate confidence must rest in God, not in our circumstances or capabilities. You cannot participate in the mission with Christ if you are dependent on anything other than Christ.
The greatest lie of our day is to believe in yourself. Instead, Jesus says, “Believe in me.” The power doesn’t come from self-belief or self-reliance—it comes from death to yourself and a life surrendered to the Spirit of God.
Bible Verse
“He replied, ‘When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?’ ‘Nothing,’ they
answered.” – Luke 22:35
Reflection Question
What resources, abilities, or securities are you most tempted to rely on instead of trusting completely in
God’s provision and power?
Quote
The one thing that will be sure to minimize the mission and the effectiveness of the mission through you is self reliance.
Prayer
God, help me identify and surrender the things I’m tempted to depend on instead of You. Teach me to trust in Your provision rather than my own preparation. Make me willing and surrendered to Your will. Amen.
