Devotional

Imagine being in the presence of someone so pure, so perfect, that even angels had to cover their faces. This is the reality Isaiah witnessed when he saw the seraphim crying out, ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty.’ These weren’t ordinary beings – they were holy angels, yet they couldn’t look directly at God. His holiness is so overwhelming that even the purest of His creation must shield themselves. This triple declaration of holiness is unique in Scripture. God isn’t called ‘good, good, good’ or ‘loving, loving, loving,’ but He is ‘holy, holy, holy.’ This isn’t just one of God’s attributes – it’s His defining characteristic that makes all His other qualities perfect. His love is holy love, His justice is holy justice, His mercy is holy mercy. Understanding God’s holiness changes how we approach Him. It’s not casual or flippant, but with reverence and awe. Yet this same holy God invites us into a relationship with Him. The very attribute that should terrify us becomes the foundation of our confidence, because when a holy God loves you, that love is perfect and unchanging.

Bible Verse
‘God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.’ – John 4:24

Reflection Question
How does understanding God’s perfect holiness change the way you approach Him in prayer and worship?

Quote
This is the only attribute of God that is mentioned in triplicate in Scripture. Nowhere does the Bible say God is good, good, good or loving, loving, loving or merciful. But he is holy, holy, holy.

Prayer
Holy God, I stand in awe of Your perfect purity and righteousness. Help me to approach You with the reverence You deserve while also embracing the incredible truth that You invite me into a relationship with You. Amen.
