The Cost of Choosing Jesus | Tuesday
Devotional
Jairus’ decision to seek Jesus wasn’t just about swallowing his pride – it was about risking everything he had worked for. As a synagogue leader, approaching this controversial rabbi could have cost him his job, his status, and his relationships. Yet he chose to risk it all for his daughter’s life.
This teaches us something profound about faith: it always costs us something. Following Jesus isn’t just about adding Him to our comfortable lives; it’s about being willing to lose everything else if necessary. Jairus understood that his daughter’s life was worth more than his reputation, more than his position, more than what others might think.
How often do we hold back from fully following Jesus because we’re afraid of what it might cost us? Maybe it’s a relationship that doesn’t honor God, a career path that compromises our values, or simply the approval of others. But here’s what Jairus discovered: what we gain in Jesus is always greater than what we lose for Him.
When we’re willing to risk everything for Jesus, we discover that He’s worth everything. The temporary losses pale in comparison to the eternal gains. Jairus was willing to give up his status in hopes that Jesus was who He claimed to be – and his faith was rewarded beyond his wildest dreams.
Bible Verse
‘Then a man named Jairus, a synagogue leader, came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come to his house because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying.’ – Luke 8:41
Reflection Question
What is Jesus asking you to risk or surrender in order to follow Him more fully, and what fears are holding you back from taking that step of faith?
Quote
It would have cost him status, maybe even his job. It would have cost him. Relationships like this is not just as easy as, well, yeah, his daughter needs to be healed. No, this man is giving up everything in hopes that Jesus is who he says he is and that he will do what he says he can do.
Prayer
Jesus, give me the courage to count the cost and choose You anyway. Help me to value Your approval above human approval and to trust that what I gain in You is worth whatever I might lose. Amen.
