When Desperation Becomes Your Friend | Monday
Dr. Michael Gossett

Devotional
Have you ever been so desperate that you were willing to do anything? Jairus, a respected synagogue leader, found himself in exactly that position. His daughter was dying, and despite his high status in the community, he fell at Jesus’ feet in public. This wasn’t just a casual request for help – this was a man who had reached the end of himself.

Desperation has a way of stripping away everything that doesn’t matter. For Jairus, his reputation, his position, even his relationships became secondary to his daughter’s life. Sometimes we think desperation is a weakness, but what if it’s actually a gift? What if those moments when we have nowhere else to turn are exactly where God wants us?

When we’re comfortable and self-sufficient, we rarely seek God with the intensity He desires. But when we’re desperate, when we’ve exhausted all our options, that’s when we discover that humility opens the door to faith. Jairus didn’t come to Jesus as a religious leader seeking a favor – he came as a broken father who needed a miracle.

God doesn’t waste our desperate moments. He uses them to position us for breakthrough. In our weakness, His strength is made perfect. When we have nothing left to offer but our need, we discover that’s exactly what He’s been waiting for.

Bible Verse
‘Now when Jesus returned, a crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him. Then a man named Jairus, a synagogue leader, came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come to his house because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying. As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him.’ – Luke 8:40-42

Reflection Question
What areas of pride or self-sufficiency in your life might be preventing you from experiencing the breakthrough that comes through humble desperation before God?

Quote
Sometimes God puts us in situations, allows us to be in situations that forces desperation. Because God knows that humility is the gateway to faith.

Prayer
Lord, help me to see that my desperate moments aren’t signs of failure, but opportunities for faith. Strip away my pride and self-reliance so that I can come to You with the humility that opens the door to Your power. Amen.
