From Fear to Holy Fear | Thursday
Devotional
After Jesus calmed the storm, something remarkable happened. The disciples went from being terrified of the storm to being terrified of Jesus. “Who is this?” they asked. “He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.” Their fear had shifted from the created to the Creator, and that was exactly the right response.
There’s a profound difference between panic and holy fear. Panic is chaotic and destructive, but holy fear is reverent awe that leads to deeper faith. The disciples’ holy fear wasn’t about being afraid Jesus would harm them – it was about recognizing they were in the presence of someone far more powerful than they had ever imagined.
This shift in perspective changes everything. When we truly grasp who Jesus is – not just our friend and Savior, but the sovereign Lord of all creation – our problems suddenly seem much smaller. The storm that seemed so threatening moments before pales in comparison to the One who commands it.
Many of us struggle with trusting Jesus in our daily emergencies, even though we trust Him for our eternal salvation. We can believe He’ll handle our sin but worry about whether He can handle our finances, relationships, or health. But if Jesus has authority over wind and waves, surely He has authority over every detail of our lives.
Holy fear leads to real faith – the kind that remembers who’s in our boat when the next storm comes.
Bible Verse
