Suffering as God’s Megaphone | Wednesday
Dr. Michael Gossett

Devotional
No one enjoys suffering, yet it serves as one of God’s most effective tools for capturing our attention. Like a megaphone cutting through the noise of a busy crowd, suffering has a way of making us stop, listen, and reevaluate what truly matters.

When life is comfortable and predictable, we easily become absorbed in temporary pursuits, forgetting our eternal destiny. We build our security on careers, relationships, and possessions that will ultimately fade away. But suffering disrupts this false sense of security, reminding us that this world is not our permanent home.

Through trials, God lovingly redirects our focus from earthly concerns to eternal realities. He uses difficult circumstances to deepen our dependence on Him, strengthen our character, and prepare us for the life to come. What feels like punishment is actually His gracious intervention to keep us from settling for less than His best.

Every moment of suffering carries a timestamp—a reminder that this life will end sooner than we think. Rather than viewing trials as evidence of God’s absence, we can see them as His loving call to remember what truly lasts.

When you face difficulties today, listen for God’s voice calling you to focus on eternal things. He’s not trying to harm you; He’s trying to save you from wasting your life on what doesn’t matter.

Bible Verse
‘Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.’ – Luke 12:6-7

Reflection Question
What earthly concerns might God be calling you to release so you can focus more fully on eternal things?

Quote
Suffering is God’s megaphone to rouse a deaf and dying and distant world that is us.

Prayer
Father, help me hear Your voice through life’s difficulties and keep my eyes fixed on what truly matters. Use my trials to draw me closer to You.
