The Danger of Forgetting | Wednesday
Devotional
Memory is powerful. When we remember God’s faithfulness, we live with confidence. When we remember His promises, we have hope. But when we forget that Jesus is returning, something dangerous happens – we begin to live as if we’re in charge. This forgetfulness doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a gradual drift that starts with small compromises and grows into self-indulgent living. We begin using our families, resources, and opportunities primarily for personal advancement rather than kingdom purposes. The antidote to this spiritual amnesia is intentional remembrance. We must regularly remind ourselves that this world is not our permanent home and that our Master will return. When we keep His return at the forefront of our minds, it acts as a guardrail, protecting us from the dangerous illusion that we’re the ultimate authority in our lives.
Bible Verse
‘But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, “My master is staying away a long time,” and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards.’ – Matthew 24:48-49
Reflection Question
What practices help you remember that Jesus is returning and you’re accountable to Him?
Quote
A wrong understanding of God’s delay will inevitably end up in self indulgence.
Prayer
Lord, guard my heart against the forgetfulness that leads to self-indulgence. Keep the reality of Your return fresh in my mind and heart.
