When Good Things Become Burdens | Tuesday
Devotional
Rules can be helpful guides, but they become dangerous when they replace relationship. Jesus confronted religious leaders who had taken God’s good laws and expanded them into impossible burdens that actually hindered people from coming to God.We do this too. We create unspoken rules about how Christians should dress, speak, or spend their time. We judge others based on our personal convictions rather than pointing them to Jesus.
Without realizing it, we can become gatekeepers instead of bridge-builders.
Think about the new believer who feels they can’t come to church because they don’t have the “right” clothes. Or the struggling parent who avoids small group because they feel judged for their imperfect family. These are real barriers we sometimes create.
Jesus came to tear down barriers, not build them. He welcomed tax collectors, prostitutes, and outcasts. His message was simple: “Come as you are, and I will transform you from the inside out.” As followers of Christ, we hold the key to life and knowledge. Our role isn’t to create more hoops for people to jump through, but to extend grace and point them directly to Jesus. He’s the only one who can truly transform a heart. Let’s be people who make it easier, not harder, for others to encounter the love of Christ.
Bible Verse
“He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and served the Baals. And all that generation also were gathered to their fathers. And there arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord or the work that he had done for Israel.” – Judges 2:10-11
Reflection Question
What unspoken rules or expectations might you be placing on others that could hinder them from experiencing God’s grace?
Quote
We have the key to life and knowledge. Instead of giving it and extending it to people, we are hindering people. When we make up our own rules, we must be cautious to not do it.
Prayer
Father, help me be a bridge-builder, not a barrier-creator. Show me where I might be hindering others from experiencing Your love and grace.
