The Power of Being Before Doing | Monday

Devotional
In our achievement-driven culture, we often measure our worth by what we accomplish. Yet there’s a profound truth that challenges this mindset: our effectiveness in serving Christ flows directly from our intimacy with Him. When Jesus visited Mary and Martha’s home, both sisters had good intentions, but only one understood the secret to meaningful service.

Mary chose to sit at Jesus’ feet, absorbing His words and presence. This wasn’t laziness or avoidance of responsibility – it was recognition that everything meaningful begins with connection to Christ. When we rush into service without first spending time with Jesus, we’re operating on empty. Our efforts, though well-intentioned, lack the power and purpose that come from divine connection.

Think about your own life. How often do you jump into your day, your ministry, or your relationships without first grounding yourself in Christ’s presence? The most productive thing you can do today isn’t checking off your to-do list – it’s positioning yourself to receive from Jesus so you can truly give to others.

Bible Verse
‘As they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”‘ – Luke 10:38-42

Reflection Question
What activities in your life might be good but are keeping you from the best – spending time with Jesus?

Quote
You cannot do for Christ without being with Christ. Everything you attempt to do for Jesus will absolutely be somewhat irrelevant if you have not first been with Christ because your being with Christ gives you the power to do for Christ.

Prayer
Lord, help me prioritize being with You before doing for You. Give me wisdom to choose what is necessary over what seems urgent.
