The Heart Behind the Ritual | Monday
Dr. Michael Gossett

Devotional
Have you ever found yourself going through the motions of faith without your heart truly being engaged? The Pharisee in today’s passage was shocked that Jesus didn’t perform the ritual washing before dinner. His amazement revealed something deeper – a heart more concerned with external appearances than internal reality.
We can easily fall into this same trap. We attend church, read our Bibles, and say our prayers, but our hearts remain distant from God. These practices are beautiful when they flow from genuine love, but they become empty performances when we’re just checking boxes. Jesus sees past our external actions straight to our hearts. He’s not impressed by our religious
resume or how well we follow the rules. What moves His heart is when we come to Him authentically, acknowledging our need for His grace and love.

Today, let’s pause and ask ourselves: Are we performing for God or connecting with Him? The difference is profound. Performance exhausts us and leaves us feeling empty. Connection with Jesus fills us with life, joy, and peace. God doesn’t want your perfect performance – He wants your authentic heart. He already knows your struggles, your doubts, and your failures. What He desires is for you to bring all of that to Him in honest relationship.

Bible Verse
“And after he had spoken, a Pharisee asked him to dine with him, so he went in and reclined at table. The Pharisee was astonished to see that he did not first wash before dinner.” – Luke 11:37-38

Reflection Question
What religious practices in your life might have become more about performance than genuine connection with God?

Quote
It is absolutely possible to be deeply devoted to religion and, and lack A relationship with Jesus. That’s scary.

Prayer
Lord, help me examine my heart and motives. I want to connect with You authentically, not just perform for You. Draw me into genuine relationship with You today.
