Guarding Against a Hard Heart | Thursday
Dr. Michael Gossett

Devotional
One of the most frightening things that can happen to a believer is developing a hard heart. When we become so focused on religious performance that we lose our sensitivity to God’s voice, we’re in dangerous territory. A hard heart doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a gradual process that begins when we start trusting in our rituals more than in our relationship with Jesus. We become so comfortable with our religious routine that we stop listening for God’s gentle corrections or invitations to grow. The Pharisees had hearts that had become like stone – impenetrable to the very Word of God standing before them. They were so committed to their way of doing things that they couldn’t recognize truth when it was right in front of them.

How do we guard against this? By staying curious rather than becoming suspicious. Curiosity keeps our hearts soft and teachable. When we approach God’s Word, other believers, and even challenging circumstances with curiosity, we remain open to what God wants to teach us. Suspicion, on the other hand, breeds cynicism and closes our hearts to growth. When we become suspicious of anything that challenges our current understanding, we stop learning and growing.

Today, ask God to keep your heart soft and responsive to His voice. Choose curiosity over cynicism, and remain teachable in His hands.

Bible Verse
“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” – Micah 6:8

Reflection Question
What areas of your faith have you become rigid about, and how can you cultivate more curiosity and openness to God’s leading?

Quote
Curiosity is the foundation of learning. Suspicion is the foundation of cynicism.

Prayer
Lord, keep my heart soft and responsive to You. Help me stay curious and teachable, always ready to grow in my understanding of Your love and truth.
