Choosing What’s Best Over What’s Good | Wednesday
Devotional
Life constantly presents us with choices between good and best. Martha’s story isn’t about a lazy sister versus a hardworking one – it’s about discernment. Martha was doing good things. Hospitality matters. Serving others is important. But in that moment, with Jesus physically present in her living room, there was something better available.
This is one of life’s greatest challenges: distinguishing between good opportunities and God’s best for us. Our culture celebrates busyness and multitasking, but Jesus calls us to focused devotion. When we’re constantly moving from one good thing to another, we can miss the best thing right in front of us.
The King of Kings was sitting in Martha’s living room, ready to teach, encourage, and transform anyone willing to listen. Yet she was distracted by preparations. How often do we miss Jesus’ presence because we’re busy preparing for Jesus? The irony is striking, but it’s also deeply relatable. Today, Jesus is still present, still speaking through His Word, still offering the ‘good portion’ that will never be taken away.
Bible Verse
‘And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.’ – Acts 2:42
Reflection Question
What good activities might be preventing you from experiencing God’s best in your current season?
Quote
That’s the great discernment of life for us. It’s trying to figure out not what is good, but what is best.
Prayer
Jesus, give me wisdom to recognize Your presence and choose what is best. Help me not to miss You while I’m busy preparing for You.
