The Mirror of God’s Standard | Monday
Devotional
When we look in a mirror, we see ourselves clearly – every flaw, every imperfection. God’s law works the same way in our spiritual lives. A lawyer once approached Jesus asking what he must do to inherit eternal life. He knew the right answers about loving God and neighbor, but Jesus used this moment to reveal a profound truth: knowing what God requires and actually living it out are worlds apart.
The law was never meant to be a ladder we climb to reach God. Instead, it serves as a mirror, showing us our desperate need for something beyond ourselves. We can memorize every commandment, attend every service, and follow every rule, yet still fall short of God’s perfect standard. This isn’t meant to discourage us – it’s meant to point us toward hope.
Recognizing our inability to meet God’s standard isn’t defeat; it’s the beginning of understanding grace. When we stop trying to earn our way to God and start acknowledging our need for rescue, we position ourselves to receive the gift He’s already provided.
Bible Verse
‘Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.’ – Romans 3:20
Reflection Question
In what areas of your life are you still trying to earn God’s approval rather than resting in His grace?
Quote
The law was never intended to be achieved. It was intended to be a mirror for our own hearts to understand that we are desperate for something else to intervene on our behalf.
Prayer
God, help me see Your law as a mirror that reveals my need for You, not a burden I must carry alone. Thank You that Your standard points me to Your grace.
