No Backup Plans | Monday
Dr. Michael Gossett

Devotional
Have you ever noticed how we approach following Jesus with one foot in and one foot out? We say we trust Him, but we keep our backup plans carefully intact. Maybe it’s that career path we’re not willing to surrender, or the comfort zone we refuse to leave. We want to follow Jesus, but only as long as it doesn’t cost us too much.

When Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortez landed in Mexico, he made a radical decision that changed everything. He burned his ships. With no way to retreat, his outnumbered forces had only one option: complete victory. This wasn’t recklessness – it was total commitment.

Jesus calls us to the same kind of dedication. He doesn’t invite us to follow Him only when it’s convenient or makes sense. He calls us to burn our ships – to release our grip on the things we think we need to feel secure. Those backup plans we cherish might actually be the very things keeping us from experiencing the abundant life He offers.

What ships are you still keeping anchored in the harbor of your heart? What are you holding onto ‘just in case’ following Jesus doesn’t work out the way you think it should? Today, consider that maybe those safety nets aren’t protecting you – they’re preventing you from discovering what God has in store when you trust Him completely.

Bible Verse
‘Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will send you out to fish for people.’ – Mark 1:17

Reflection Question
What backup plan or safety net are you most afraid to release as you follow Jesus, and what do you think is really behind that fear?

Quote
Jesus didn’t say, hey, come and follow me as long as it makes sense to you. Come and follow me as long as it is convenient for you. Come and follow me when you feel like it. Come and follow me as long as you can keep your comforts intact.

Prayer
Lord, help me identify the ships I’m still keeping anchored in my life. Give me the courage to trust You completely, even when I can’t see the outcome. I want to follow You wholeheartedly, not halfway. Amen.
