Beyond Temporary Happiness | Monday
Dr. Michael Gossett

Devotional
We live in a world obsessed with happiness – the next purchase, promotion, or experience that will finally make us feel complete. But there’s something deeper available to us as followers of Christ. Real joy isn’t dependent on our circumstances or achievements. It’s a settled confidence in our souls that remains steady even when life gets difficult.

This joy doesn’t come from denying reality or pretending everything is fine. Instead, it flows from understanding who we are in Christ and what He has secured for us. When we anchor our hearts in eternal truths rather than temporary situations, we discover a contentment that the world cannot give or take away.

Many people mistake happiness for joy, but they’re fundamentally different. Happiness depends on what happens to us, while joy depends on what has happened for us through Christ’s work on the cross. This distinction changes everything about how we approach both good times and difficult seasons.

Bible Verse
‘Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.’ – Luke 10:13

Reflection Question
What temporary things have you been looking to for happiness that might be preventing you from experiencing deeper, lasting joy?

Quote
A true follower of Jesus is going to experience real joy in life. It’s the kind of joy that is this good feeling in your soul. No matter what is taking place around you, no matter what circumstance is happening, no matter what battle you’re facing, what healing is in front of you, no matter what’s going on in the media around us, that there’s this joy, this good feeling of this soul that cannot be taken away.

Prayer
Lord, help me distinguish between fleeting happiness and lasting joy. Teach me to find my contentment in You rather than in circumstances that change.
