Being a Good Neighbor | Friday
Devotional
The lawyer’s original question to Jesus was essentially, “Who qualifies as my neighbor?” He wanted to limit his responsibility, to draw boundaries around his obligation to love. But Jesus flipped the question entirely: instead of asking who deserves our love, we should ask whether we’re being loving people.
The question isn’t “Who are my neighbors?” The question is “Am I neighborly?” This shift changes everything. Instead of looking for reasons to exclude people from our care, we start looking for opportunities to include them. Instead of asking what others deserve, we ask what we can give.
Being a good neighbor means having eyes that see need, a heart that feels compassion, and hands that take action. It means being the kind of person who stops when others pass by, who gives when others withhold, who cares when others remain indifferent.
This neighborly love isn’t limited by geography, ethnicity, social status, or personal preference. It extends to the difficult coworker, the struggling family member, the stranger in need, and even those who have hurt us. When we’ve been rescued by Jesus, we become agents of His rescue mission to others.
The world is full of people lying wounded along life’s road. The question isn’t whether they deserve our help – the question is whether we’ll be the kind of people who stop to help.
Bible Verse
‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and, Love your neighbor as yourself.’ – Deuteronomy 6:5
Reflection Question
Who in your life needs you to be a ‘good neighbor’ to them right now, and what practical step can you take today?
Quote
The question is not who are my neighbors? The question is, am I neighborly? Am I a good neighbor?
Prayer
Lord, open my eyes to see the needs around me and give me a heart that responds with Your love. Make me a good neighbor to everyone You place in my path.
