When Love Interrupts Our Comfort | Tuesday
Dr. Michael Gossett

Devotional
We all love the idea of following Jesus—until it gets uncomfortable. We’re drawn to His love, His peace, His promises of abundant life. But what happens when His way of doing things clashes with our preferences, our plans, or our prejudices?

Simon the Pharisee found himself in exactly this situation. He was happy to have Jesus as his dinner guest, probably enjoying the status that came with hosting such a notable teacher. But when an uninvited woman—a known sinner—crashed his respectable dinner party, Simon’s comfort zone was shattered. Suddenly, following Jesus wasn’t so convenient anymore.

This woman’s act of worship was messy, emotional, and socially inappropriate. She let down her hair in public, wept openly, and touched a man who wasn’t her husband. Everything about her presence violated the social norms Simon held dear. Yet Jesus not only allowed it—He celebrated it.

How often do we find ourselves in Simon’s shoes? We love Jesus when He fits neatly into our lives, when His teachings align with our existing beliefs, when following Him doesn’t require us to change too much. But authentic faith means allowing Jesus to interrupt our comfort, challenge our assumptions, and expand our hearts beyond what feels safe.

The beautiful truth is that Jesus’ interruptions are always invitations—invitations to experience deeper love, greater freedom, and more authentic relationships. When we resist His gentle disruptions, we miss out on the very transformation our souls are longing for.

Bible Verse
“As a woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume.” – Luke 7:37

Reflection Question
In what areas of your life are you loving Jesus until it becomes inconvenient or uncomfortable, and how might God be inviting you to embrace His way instead of your own?

Quote
We love the things of Jesus until it interrupts the things that we do. Like, we love God’s word until it interrupts the way of life that we think would be best for us.

Prayer
Jesus, forgive me for the times I want You to be my mascot rather than my Lord. Help me to welcome Your loving interruptions in my life, even when they challenge my comfort zone. Give me the courage to follow You completely, trusting that Your way is always better than my own. Amen.
