When Darkness Surrounds | Monday
Dr. Michael Gossett

Devotional
We all face moments of darkness in our lives. Sometimes it’s the loss of a loved one, a devastating diagnosis, or a broken relationship. These dark moments can feel overwhelming, as if they might swallow us whole. In Luke 7, we encounter a widow who knew this darkness intimately. She had already lost her husband, and now her only son—her sole provider and protector—was being carried out for burial. In her culture, this meant complete destitution. Her future looked impossibly bleak.

Yet into this scene of utter despair walks Jesus. He doesn’t avoid the funeral procession or pass by on the other side. Instead, He walks directly toward the pain. This is our God—One who moves toward our suffering rather than away from it.

Darkness is not just the absence of light in our lives. It’s the presence of despair, uncertainty, and turmoil. It feels heavy, oppressive, and all-consuming. But the beautiful truth is that darkness, no matter how thick, cannot overcome the light of Christ. His presence changes everything.

When you feel surrounded by darkness today, remember that Jesus is already walking toward you. He sees your pain. He knows your fear. And He brings with Him a light that no darkness can extinguish.

Bible Verse
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” – Genesis 1:1-3

Reflection Question
What area of darkness in your life seems most overwhelming right now, and how might remembering that Jesus is walking toward that very darkness change your perspective?

Quote
Darkness has a way of doing that, doesn’t it? Darkness has a way to swallow all hope in your life. It’s like something you have to fight against. It’s something you have to remind yourself constantly that darkness will not end.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, when darkness feels overwhelming, help me remember that You are the light that no darkness can overcome. Give me the courage to believe that You are walking toward my pain, not away from it. Thank You that Your light brings hope to my most desperate situations. Amen.
