Standing Firm in a World of Shifting Opinions | Thursday
Dr. Michael Gossett

Devotional
After addressing John’s disciples, Jesus turned to the crowd and spoke about John’s character. He asked what they had gone to see in the wilderness—a reed shaken by the wind? Someone dressed in soft clothing? No, they had seen a prophet—and more than a prophet.

Jesus wasn’t criticizing John for his questions. Instead, He was highlighting John’s unwavering commitment to truth despite opposition. Unlike a reed bending with every breeze of public opinion, John stood firm in his convictions. He didn’t seek comfort or popularity but boldly proclaimed God’s message regardless of the consequences.

In our doubt-filled moments, we often feel pressure to abandon our faith or compromise our convictions. The world offers many alternatives to the narrow path of following Jesus. But true faith isn’t about avoiding all questions—it’s about maintaining our commitment to Christ even as we work through our uncertainties.

Jesus reminds us: “Instead of being a reed, just going with the wind and going with people every time they get upset or every time they’re critical, and then you kind of bend to that. Jesus says no.”

John’s example challenges us to stand firm in our core commitment to Christ even when doubts arise about specific aspects of our faith. We can question circumstances, wrestle with difficult passages of Scripture, or struggle to understand God’s ways while still maintaining our fundamental trust in His character and promises.

Today, choose to be more than a reed shaken by the wind. Stand firm in your faith even as you honestly engage with your questions.

Bible Verse
“As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: ‘What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?'” – Luke 7:24

Reflection Question
In what areas of your life might you be behaving like a “reed shaken by the wind,” allowing others’ opinions or cultural pressures to sway your convictions rather than standing firm in biblical truth?

Quote
John wasn’t living for comfort. He wasn’t living for people to agree with him. He wasn’t living so that everybody could be happy with his choices and the way that he preached or the way that he led. Instead, man, John preached with courage, conviction.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, give me the courage to stand firm in my faith even when doubts arise. Help me to be like John—unwavering in my commitment to You despite opposition or difficult circumstances. When I feel like a reed being blown about by every wind of opinion or emotion, anchor me in Your unchanging truth. May my life be characterized by conviction rather than compromise. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
