Extending Mercy: The Heart of God’s Kingdom | Friday
Dr. Michael Gossett

Devotional
Mercy is love in action toward those who don’t deserve it. It’s not just feeling compassion—it’s doing something about it. When Jesus calls us to be merciful as our Father is merciful, He’s inviting us to participate in one of God’s most beautiful attributes.

Mercy goes beyond forgiveness. It actively seeks the good of others, even when they’ve caused us pain. It reaches out with practical help, kind words, and gracious actions. Mercy doesn’t wait for an apology before extending goodwill.

The enemies Jesus speaks about aren’t abstract concepts. They’re real people in our lives—the coworker who undermined us, the friend who betrayed our trust, the family member who wounded us deeply. These are the very people toward whom we’re called to extend mercy.

When we respond with mercy instead of judgment, we create space for God to work in seemingly impossible situations. We become channels of His grace in a world starved for genuine love. And as we pour out mercy to others, God continues to pour His mercy into us—a beautiful cycle of receiving and giving that transforms communities.

Imagine what would happen if God’s people became known primarily for their extraordinary mercy. What a powerful testimony that would be!

Bible Verse
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” – Romans 3:23

Reflection Question
Who is one specific person in your life that needs your mercy right now, and what is one tangible way you could extend mercy to them this week?

Quote
What if today, all across this room, we responded with mercy? What if you were the first one to take a step and respond with mercy?

Prayer
Merciful Father, thank You for showing me mercy when I deserved judgment. Help me to be an instrument of Your mercy in this world. Give me courage to take the first step in extending mercy to those who have hurt me. May Your kingdom come through acts of mercy that reflect Your heart. In Jesus’ name, amen.
