“The Ten Commandments”

Exodus 20: 1-22, Deuteronomy 5: 15, Galatians 4: 3-7

– Jason Humphrey, High School Minister

In this time of Advent, we remember and relive the feeling of anticipation God’s people felt as they eagerly awaited the fulfillment of the promised Savior. They longed for freedom, not just from the penalty of sin but from slavery to sin.

Following their release from slavery to Pharaoh, God gave them the ten commandments to obey.

Read Exodus 20:1-22.

In verse 2, what does He remind them of?

Read Deuteronomy 5:15

Why does God say He gave the fourth commandment?

Their slavery hindered their worship. These commandments were His answer to their ultimate need to worship Him.  Their worship would come through obedience. Our merciful God knew how easy it would be for them to switch from being slaves to Pharaoh to being slaves to sin. God had performed great miracles to accomplish a great rescue out of great love for these people. Don’t miss the order. First, He rescued them, then He showed them how to worship Him through obedience. He does the same for us. Romans 5:8 tells us that God proved His love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us.  He doesn’t wait for us to follow all the rules to call us to salvation. After He has forgiven our sins, He teaches us how to be free from slavery to sin.

Read Galatians 4:3-7

Spend some time thinking about your freedom from sin as God, your gracious Father, took you from a slave to a child of God and heir. Are their particular sins you have seen freedom from? Praise Him for coming for that gift of freedom!
